Sofa Disposal

Sofa Disposal – How does the new guidance for disposing of WUDS and POPs affect our customers?

Example of WUDS (waste upholstered domestic seating) from a house clearance. Picture shows 2 sofas and a pile of junk.

So, first and most obvious question, what are WUDS and POPs?

WUDS stands for Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating (for example that old sofa bed in the spare room that you want to get rid of). During manufacture, upholstered seating may have been treated with flame retardants containing POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants). POPs are what makes disposing of upholstered domestic seating a problem.

New guidance from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) on disposing of WUDS requires that waste containing POPs must be disposed of in a way that prevents POPs escaping into the environment. This affects waste management sites and how they handle WUDS like sofas. In addition to changes in handling procedures, all POP-containing WUDS must now be incinerated because this is the only way to change the structure of POPs.

Fly tipped mattresses

What does this mean to me and you?

This means that the price to dispose of upholstered items will increase. Charity shops will likely become much pickier, only accepting items they are confident they’ll be able to sell, to avoid incurring WUDS charges. And, unfortunately, there will undoubtedly be an increase in flytipping. This is what happened when the price to dispose of fridges and mattresses increased, we started to see fridges and mattresses being flytipped in fields and at the side of roads.

I phoned many companies prior to speaking with Sarah, and i decided to chose junk-it because of her friendly, helpful customer service. After clearing out, i felt embarrassed with the amount of rubbish I had gathered. However, when Dom, Charlie, and Mikey came for collection, they couldn’t be any nicer. It was as if no job was too much. I felt so relaxed, i asked them to price another area of my property where old garden toys, and other rubbish needs removed. Thanks for being so lovely and I'll definitely be back in touch for your help again soon.

I've used Junk-It a number of times now, and every time I do, I am reminded of how I would never look for another junk removal company. They are just perfect! From a super-quick response from Sarah (on a bank holiday!), booked in for exactly my preferred time, a phone call when the truck was on the way, and then super efficient removal of my items. Jordan and Alex were the team on this day, and they were champions! Lovely, relaxed and chatty, while being quick, calm, organised and making the removal (including two very large sideboards) seem so easy! Thanks guys!

My law firm used Junk-It a third time (hence another review) to remove two office bookcases and a chair. The appointment was very prompt, I called Friday afternoon and was able to get an uplift appointment Monday afternoon. I was given a window for the uplift and the drivers called in advance to advise of their ETA, and thereafter arrived right on time. Connor, Charlie, and Alex in Glasgow were exceptional and exemplified the highest standard of professionalism and efficiency during the uplift. It was seamless and at a very reasonable cost. I highly recommend Junk-It for a smooth, hassle-free service.
