Junk It Scotland
If you work in an office, hopefully you will not notice too much waste or clutter. Nowadays, with more stringent health and safety guidelines in place, offices cannot afford to get this wrong.
As we have mentioned in previous blogs, there’s nothing worse than sitting in an overcrowded house full of junk. It makes you feel cluttered and disorganised (unless you are the ones among us who collect everything and can’t bear to throw anything away due to sentimental value!). However, most of us have to be ruthless at some point in our lives, otherwise we would be living in a permanent jumble sale.
We thought you might like to know a little more about our partnership with the Woodlands Trust. Our commitment to only ever purchasing new vehicles to carry out our collections ensures that we are always in the most fuel efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles possible. Even our cool trucks though still unavoidably produce some Co2 emissions, that’s why we decided to partner with and donate to the Woodlands Trust to pay to have these emissions offset by the planting of new saplings!
Watchdog’s exposure of fly-tippers last night on BBC1 was commendable in our opinion. It highlighted the true cost of what has become a scourge on our society and the lengths that unscrupulous waste carriers will go to in order to avoid paying the appropriate disposal costs and cash in on a ‘fast buck’!
MFI was established in 1964 and was a national British furniture retailer. It was one of the largest suppliers of bedroom and kitchen furniture and operated in out of town locations, the advantage being that the company could get bigger premises for less rent. Good quality furniture was sold at reasonable prices. However, with other retailers rapidly expanding into furniture, such as B&Q, and the opening of Swedish furniture giant Ikea in 1987, sales took a sharp decline. With the recent rec
We will shortly be going live with our brand new website and would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Aberdeen customers! As well as our original pages, such as blogs and contact information, we hope this these changes will make it simpler for our customers to use our services and that you can also have an input into the information we post.
We will shortly be introducing a new member of our team, Jamie, who is the new face of Junk-It. Thanks go to our customers and a recent facebook campaign who gave us ideas for names. Jamie is being kept strictly under wraps for now and will be revealed in the middle of May when we launch our new website.
It’s an exciting time for us as we have now expanded our business up north to Aberdeen! Our first big job was work carried out in conjunction with The University of Aberdeen.
We were delighted to receive a letter from the British Heart Foundation thanking our Edinburgh depot for our donations from house clearance and rubbish clearance in Edinburgh.

These services cover plumbing, heating, gas, electrics, air conditioning, ventilation as well as kitchens and bathrooms etc. For some of our clients we also offer the role of facilities management/project management.
When Ross Martin at Junk It asked me to write a guest blog for their website I was more than happy to do so. Not least because any time we need property cleared or items of furniture uplifted they are the only company we use but also because we share many of their values and commitment to service.
We promote reuse of redundant IT equipment to minimise the environmental
impact of computer disposals and follow the waste hierarchy principles of
reuse before recycling. This allows customers to reduce their disposal costs
and improve their Corporate Social Responsibility and green credentials
while ensuring WEEE Regulations compliant disposal.
We all like to hold on to items from our pasts that carry a strong sentimental value but if you find yourself secretly nodding in agreement at any of the following then there is a fair chance that you’re hoarding might be starting to get just a little bit out of control.

At Junk-It we like to keep the new-age claptrap to a minimum! However, there does seem to be truth in the idea that you can tell an enormous amount about the inner condition of a person by looking at the outer conditions of his or her life.
Many studies have shown that potential buyers perceive a home that is strewn with junk to be decrepit and worth far less money that its true market value. People also associate the presence of junk with more general structural decay and undesirable creepy crawlies and bugs!
Here’s a junk removal job that many other companies might have shied away from!
The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) recently published some truly shocking statistics. Local authorities in Scotland are recycling a mere 44% of the household waste they collect!
Believe it or not, we recycle more than 80% of domestic waste - fully audited.
Why such a massive difference?
Many people in Scotland are making a positive contribution towards local authority recycling and the local environment in general through the use of multicoloured recycling bins at

This week we’ve had a surge in calls from anxious businesses with looming deadlines to vacate their existing premises. Back in December we were finalists for the “Waste and Resources” award at VIBES 2011, which is an accolade given out in recognition of “how effective waste and resource management can create new business opportunities towards meeting Scotland’s climate change targets”. Competing against some truly massive names, we didn’t ultimately win top prize, but we DID take huge encouragement from what the judges had to say… which we’d like to now share with you!
An eye-popping recent report from Keep Scotland Beautiful rated Edinburgh and Glasgow rock bottom of Scotland’s “cleanliness” league table once again, citing a steady rise in fly-tipping, litter and graffiti as three of the key reasons why.
“Fly-tipping” simply means illegally dumping waste by the side of the road, or on a piece of land with no license to accept what’s being disposed.
In November 2011, we mailed a grand total of 125 letters to all of the customers that we serviced in Edinburgh and Glasgow during that time. The most common job types that we completed were house clearance, rubbish removal, and waste disposal. To date, we’ve received back an amazing 80 replies (64% response) from those customers serviced in November – without offering any financial incentive or future service discounts for individuals to take time to write to us.

We recently completed our biggest EVER project clearing 5 floors of Napier University’s Merchiston Campus as part of a brand new £100m refurbishment.
In total we removed more than 85 truckloads of “junk” from scores of offices and labs (many reminding us of chemistry classes at school!) an impressive 24 days ahead of schedule - despite being placed under some uncommon restrictions around when we could access to the premises to do the job.

In recent years there’s been a surge in the number of companies offering instant cash in return for your personal possessions. Online there are various websites promising cash for your old mobile phone or DVDs and even on the High Street more and more companies offering you instant cash for your cherished personal possessions.
In November 2006 Ross Martin abandoned his successful twelve-year career as an estate agent to embark on a whole new career in junk - starting from scratch with just a single truck and his kitchen table with no outside investors.
One of the things we challenge ourselves to do most here at Junk-It is continuously think up creative new ways to recycle the items we collect. That’s why we’re thrilled to say that in the month of October 2011 we successfully diverted a massive 82% of junk collected by each of our seven trucks away from landfill.
For the first time ever we’ve just added a 6.5-tonne vehicle to our fast growing fleet - a big step up in size from our usual 3.5-tonners. This new truck takes our fleet up to seven in total and offers us the important benefit of greater weight capacity for heavier jobs. It comes to us fresh off the production line as per our company policy of only ever buying brand new low-emission vehicles.
If you’re thinking about skip hire in the Edinburgh or Glasgow area, Junk-It is a fantastic new service here to make your life easier by doing exactly the same job faster, better, cheaper, and even “greener”.

Recently we got an unexpected call from a large national supermarket chain asking us to make an unusual collection. Iceland had accidentally overbought 450 loaves of bread for one of their brand new store openings! How do you recycle THAT???

We have developed efficient procedures for ensuring that we can organise effective disposal of computer monitor equipment for your company. This involves adherence to all the WEEE guidelines, and if appropriate making sure that it is environmentally friendly recycling rather than straight disposal of computer monitor equipment that takes place.
